La maldita circunstancia
Liliana Felipe
The damn circumstance
Could it be because of the damn circumstance of water everywhere, could it be?
Because of the humidity, because of Yemayá or because of my age,
because of the misery that is trying to remember,
or because of its sweet and sad smell,
or because of its persistent lizard-like skin.
Could it be because of the blessed circumstance of water everywhere, could it be?
Because of Amelia or the mojito I drank,
or because Hemingway was into daiquiris,
or because of the always open door with the legs of an expert.
Or because of Ochún or because of Changó,
"no one can leave", no one wants to leave,
or because no one warned me
"no one can leave", no one wants to leave.
Could it be because of the blessed circumstance of water everywhere, could it be?
Because of "the weight of an island in the love of a town"
or because of Che that provokes all this, Ernesto:
the musical omnipresence, the nine o'clock cannon shot, the Malecón.
Could it be because of the wicked circumstance of water everywhere, could it be?
That the celestial or earthly powers,
or the so human and wild presences,
may protect these insular lands from the poor continents.
It could be Fidel, it could be Tomás,
"no one can leave", no one wants to leave,
or because of Haydée, or because of Martí,
"no one can leave", no one wants to leave.
It could be because of what is to come or everything before,
the thing is that I fell in love with a lady already older,
between 45 and 46,
a veteran who is the Cuban revolution.
