O Ipê e O Prisioneiro
Liu e Léu
The Ipe and the Prisoner
Many years ago
I was locked up in this cold cell
On the second floor of the penitentiary
Out on the street, I could see
When a gardener planted an ipe tree
And as the days went by
It grew and came to life
While I was suffering
My blooming ipe
Next to my cell
Now it reaches the height
Of my window
There’s just one difference between us now
In here, the nights
No longer have dawn
How much light you have out there
I see on your trunk
A parasitic vine hugging you tight
While it hugs you, it drains your sap
Leading you to death
That’s how it was for me
She embraced me, then betrayed me
So I killed her
And now I only have your company
My blooming ipe
Next to my cell
Now it reaches the height
Of my window
There’s just one difference between us now
In here, the nights
No longer have dawn
How much light you have out there
