A Través de la Pampa
Los Cuatro Cuartos
Through the Pampas
Behind are the villages,
with their houses and orchards;
the soldiers march blindly,
through the middle of the desert.
The soldiers come in gray,
like a procession of ghosts;
fever, pampas, dust and sun,
burn their throats.
"Forward, alive the step!",
shouts Sergeant Chamorro
and the ground vibrates to the beat,
of the hard calambours.
Row of red and blue, (Row of red and blue),
cavalry and cannon, (cavalry and cannon)
are overcoming the sand,
between sun and gusts of wind.
Behind are the brides,
the children, and the loves;
the men keep marching,
behind their banners.
With their brave sound of stars,
the night tests the desert;
hunger, sorrow, cold and thirst,
the regiment carries.
Forward, alive the step!
Forward, alive the step!
Forward, alive the step!
