Los Ornelas
Los Huracanes del Norte
The Ornelas
It was the year '77
Sunday, May 15th
Five brave souls died
In a cockfighting ring
Left halfway in the pit
Five men and two horses
Pedro, Juan, José, and Francisco
The other was Teodomiro
From the ranch of Reparito
Ornelas was their name
All five were brothers
Brave and determined
The fight was in Michoacán
At the ranch of El Potrero
Teams from Apatzingán
From Toluca and Guerrero
From Mexico City
From Uruapan and Pueblo Nuevo
From Pueblo Nuevo came down
To fight was José Sagrero
The Ornelas responded
With roosters and with cash
They won all the fights
But lost their lives instead
The father of the Ornelas
A good man and quite wealthy
Begged them not to go
Crying, the poor old man
I lose my money in vain
Just to keep their promise
They mounted their horses
Ignoring their father’s pleas
Sagrero was waiting
Confident he’d beat them
When the tables turned
They were killed that afternoon
Ten million they were betting
The Ornelas against Sagrero
They shot them down dirty
Because they were scared of them
Twenty armed cowards
Surprised them all at once
The Sagreros, terrified
Ran away in a panic
They didn’t even take their guns
Fearing they might still be alive
They killed two horses
And that’s where the ballad ends.
