Flor de Huiñaj
Los Manseros Santiagueños
Huiñaj Flower
The folks from the countryside tell that in the mountains lived
A dark-skinned indigenous girl, a heritage of Quechua race
When she left the loom, from time to time she would go out
To make way for her charm, the Sun itself would hide
The whole mountain rejoiced when she was seen there
Always wearing a yellow flower in her hair
She was the beauty of the mountain, blessed by the sky
That beautiful indigenous girl was called Huiñaj Flower
Death wanted to take her, and sensing her agony
Her body turned into a tree, thus prolonging her life
And the local gods, to bid farewell to her soul
Gave the tree flowers, all yellow in color
And since then the sky cries for her absence in life
And with tears of rain, wets her suffering land
She was the beauty of the mountain, blessed by the sky
That beautiful indigenous girl was called Huiñaj Flower
