Colpito Qui M'avete... Un Di All 'Azzurro Spazio'
Luciano Pavarotti
Struck Here You Have Me... One Day in 'Azure Space'
Struck here you have me where I jealously hide
The purest beating of the soul
Now you will see, maiden, what a poem
The word love is, here the cause of mockery!
One day in the azure space I looked deep
And on the meadows full of violets, the sun was raining gold
And the world was shining with gold
The earth seemed like an immense treasure
And the firmament served as her casket
From the earth to my forehead
A lively caress, a kiss came
I cried defeated by love
I love you who kiss me, divinely beautiful
Oh my homeland!
And I wanted to pray for love!
I crossed the threshold of a church
There a priest in the niches
Of the saints and the virgin
Was piling up gifts
And to the deaf ear
A trembling old man
In vain asked for bread
And in vain stretched out his hand!
I crossed the door of the dwellings
A man slandered there
Cursing the ground
That satisfies the treasury
And he hurled against God
And against men
The tears of the children
In such miseries, what does the patrician offspring do?
Only your eyes express humanity here
A look of pity, which I have looked at you with
As if to an angel
And I said: Behold the beauty of life!
But then, at your words
A new pain has struck me in the chest
Oh beautiful young girl
Do not despise the words of a poet
Listen! You do not know love
Love, divine gift, do not mock it
Love is the soul and life of the world!
