Star Cow and Cornmeal Ox
Excuse me, doctor, let me tell my story
Today I'm in a strange land, my suffering is quite sad
But I used to be very happy living in my place
I had a good horse and I liked to ride
And every day I sang at the gate of the corral
Hey, hey, hey, star cow, oh cornmeal ox
I am a son of the Northeast, I don't deny my nature
But a dreadful drought drove me from there to here
There I had my little herd, it's not good to remember
My beautiful star cow and my handsome cornmeal ox
When it was late afternoon, I started to sing
Hey, hey, hey, star cow, oh cornmeal ox
That dreadful drought messed everything up
No grass grew in the field to feed the cattle
The backlands dried up, the dams dried out
My star cow died, my cornmeal ox was gone
I lost everything I had, I could never sing again
Hey, hey, hey, star cow, oh cornmeal ox
