Goodbye
Goodbye Dad, Goodbye Mom
I'm the son who returns, knocking on the same door
That I closed long ago,
When I left crying and sobbing here
I left Dad and Mom behind.
Today I'm back, I see the empty cage of the canary that one day,
I set free myself,
Maybe the poor little bird returned to its old nest
Just like I returned to my home.
I see my police dog barking out in the yard
Maybe he doesn't even recognize me
Come here, Wolf, come see your owner who left you behind
Without even saying goodbye.
It's already late at night, I see the closed window
Of my old folks' room
Maybe Mom is crying, never thinking that now
Her son is so close!
Maybe they think I died, because I never wrote to them
Since my farewell.
They must be getting old, already at the bend in the road
That leads to the end of life.
Open the door, Dad!
Your son is back to ask for your blessing,
I can’t get the words out, choked up with emotion
No need to say anything, let the tears flow
Soak my chest with pain.
I who lived without affection, 20 years, dear Dad
Now I want your love!
Dad, where's my dear Mom?
My thoughts guess, looking into your eyes
My son, crying, I want to tell you:
Your hand can't live, it went away to be with God.
Like a flower among thorns, it withered in abandonment.
Dad, how old you look
Your hair is all white,
Those were the endless afternoons.
I see on the wall the photograph of dear Mom that I left
Crying one day,
It seems to say to me:
"Son, how happy I am to see you return."
I left to make a fortune, to pull myself out of poverty
And for my dad and my dear mom,
But I understood too late,
That my old parents were the greatest wealth I had.
