El 45
María Elena Walsh
The 45
Do you remember sister those times,
life gave us the same lesson.
In the spring of '45
you were fifteen years old just like me.
Do you remember sister those cadets,
of the first bolero and tea at El Galeon
when on Sundays the rain brought
the voice of Bing Crosby and a love verse.
Do you remember the Plaza de Mayo
when 'the one I told you about' came out to the balcony.
Everything changed so much that the childhood sun
suddenly mooned us.
Do you remember sister those dry times
when a poor peso stretched out
and by paying us a whole age of rabonas
it was worth more than a million today.
Do you remember sister that from very far away
a smell of horror drove us crazy:
it was from Hiroshima where so many girls
had fifteen years like you and me.
Do you remember that later in life
came in high heels and separated us.
We no longer share the same tram,
only the good Lord brings us together.
