La Ciudad de Brujas
María Elena Walsh
The City of Witches
If y'all saw the winter
In the city of Witches
It's such an ancient winter
And it never seems to end
There's a sly fugitive
That the grannies look for
And they sit on the sidewalk
To thread him on their needles
There are streets of nobody and silence
Houses of musty stone
Many canals and canals
Where the water is still and mute
With lordly boredom
The swans dare
To skate on the frost
Under bridges of moss and mist
Chalk flowers in the sky
The windmills draw
And dream flour fables
Remembering wrinkled bread
Bells from the bell towers
All ring together
Singing old joys
Of lies like the rain
If y'all saw the winter
In the city of Witches
It's like a toy dream
Abandoned by the Moon
