Las Estatuas
María Elena Walsh
The Statues
When it rains, I feel a certain unease
The statues
Can never go out as a couple
With umbrellas
And they remain as if in penance
Lonely
Pointing out the inevitability
In the squares
They watch seriously as little cars pass by
And maids
They don't laugh because they never had
A childhood
Puppets
Big, still
No one plays with them
But if a magic shadow
Were to erase them forever
What pain would fall
Upon Buenos Aires
When it rains and I go to sleep
The statues
Watch over pale until
Morning comes
And from the dream of the little birds
They are guardians
They try to convey their memory
Without words
And they ask us for the little alms
Of looking at them
When they want to tell us a story
Of the homeland
Puppets
Big, still
No one plays with them
But if a magic shadow
Were to erase them forever
What pain would fall
Upon Buenos Aires
