El Romance De La Niña María Luz

The Romance of Little María Luz
There was no one in Santa Cruz
nor can there be
a more beautiful gypsy
than little María Luz.
And there was no greater
and more suffering love
than the one she had for the bandit
from Antonio to Inés
a gypsy by father
who knows
he left her for another woman
with less modesty
and more money...
And in her pain
she swore by her faith
to keep her love
for the one from Nazareth.
And one afternoon
to Jesus of great power
she promised to become a nun
for you, my only love
I don't want more flattery
than to know myself as your woman.
And from her altar
the good image spoke
every night, a tormented soul
when you go to pray
looking back
you will see beside your steps
that of the barefoot Christ
walking towards the pair.
But the first thing Antonio did
when he returned
and with bad art
he led her astray
he undressed her of the nun's habit
and then quickly dressed her.
He left as he came
by the wrong path
singing: María Luz is not a virgin
and doesn't light a candle.
Poor girl
who to Jesus of great power
promised to become a nun
for you, my only love
I don't want more flattery
than to know myself as your woman.
But that night
she is no longer praying
her sad eyes
looked back
and seeing only one set of footprints
she cried... and cried.
Oh blessed Jesus
give me your forgiveness
I don't want to walk alone
in my profession
and he replied:
Little dark one, little faith
if you have only seen one set of footprints
they are the ones my feet left
as I carried you in my arms
for I have been faithful to you.
