The Other Country
As if said in passing, I'm saying it,
As if said in passing while it's possible.
I had faults, I swear
Every time you caught my middle-class attitude.
And also disenchantment
When you criticized my left-wing speech.
Two countries are too much, I repeat,
For so much consciousness.
If the path was wrong
Maybe it will never be known.
There will always be those who condemn
And also those who defend.
I don't know,
It's not our thing anymore.
I just insist on telling you,
And I ask you to put it in the account's favor,
We didn't choose to stay with our arms crossed,
Or hide our heads,
We chose to take a chance.
And that's the big difference.
The other country
I have seen the other country
Barefoot in the sand
With eyes of a cunumi
Asking us about dignity
I have seen the other country
Dressed in loneliness
Falling asleep on the platform
Without a door to knock on
I have seen the other country
Demanding freedom
For those it imprisoned
Without explanation, so much impunity
I have seen it risking
Everything for others
With white handkerchiefs
Let it pass, let it pass
I watched it release its hope to the wind
Like a kite of sun in flight
I watched it return from uncertain work
With a raised fist, I keep seeing it
I watched it fight defending a dream
I watched it in your eyes, hey comrade
So intensely
I keep seeing it, I keep seeing it
I have seen the other country
In our children, my love
In the tremendous illusion
Of believing it, of believing it
It hurts, I must say
In the singer that I am
In the teacher of yesterday
Again and again, again and again
