Déclaration

Moustaki Georges Moustaki Georges

Declaration

I declare a state of lasting happiness
And everyone's right to all the perks.
I say that suffering is a sacrilege
When there are roses and white bread for all.
I contest the legitimacy of wars,
The justice that kills and the death that punishes,
The consciences that sleep deep in their beds,
Civilization hand in hand with mercenaries.
I watch this aging century die.
A different world will rise from its ashes
But it’s no longer enough just to wait for it:
I’ve waited too long. I want it now.
Let my wife be beautiful every hour of the day
Without having to hide under makeup
And let it no longer be said to put off
The desire I have for her and to make love.
Let our sons be men, not just adults
And let them be what we wanted to be once.
Let us be brothers, comrades, and partners
Instead of two generations hurling insults.
Let our fathers finally break free
And take the time to caress their wives
After a lifetime of sweat and tears
And the interwar years that weren’t peace.
I declare a state of lasting happiness
Without it being just words with music,
Without waiting for messianic times to come,
Without it being voted in any parliament.
I say that from now on, we will be responsible.
We won’t answer to anyone or anything
And we’ll turn chance into destiny,
Alone on board, without master, without god, and without devil.
And if you want to come, cross the bridge.
There’s room for everyone and for each one
But we still have a way to go
To see a new star shine.
I declare a state of lasting happiness.
