El Tercer Dia

The Third Day
On the third day he sees the sunrise
from an empty bed,
on the third we hear him crossing himself,
Jesus, Joseph, and Mary.
And the third day, he swears, is the worst
you should see him
on his knees with a stupid face
scratching the floor.
He made lists of the people
he had slept with.
He marked in red the names of those
who ended up hurt.
His last name appears once
every five or six times
in a red so bright
that looking at it hurt.
He cried and moaned thinking
he still had three more days.
And he rearranged the furniture
on the thirtieth of November,
went to sleep and upon waking up
they were back where they always were.
December is the cruelest month,
who could deny it
if the hours today last
as long as a lifetime,
if his life plan as of today
consists of nothing more
than reaching the fourth day.
If the hours today last
as long as a lifetime.
'I'll make it to the fourth day,' he moaned,
but the worst part, sir,
is that it will come, it will come,
and that day will be followed by
another day,
and another day,
and another day,
and another,
and one more,
and another,
and one more,
and another,
and another,
and to that day will follow
another day,
and another day,
and another day,
and another,
and one more,
and another,
and one more,
and one more,
and another,
and another,
and another,
and another,
and one more,
and another day.
