Waddenlied

Our country is small, everyone knows,
we learned that in school long ago.
But it can be grand in its beauty,
especially when I think of the Wad.
The Zeeland waters are also stunning,
just like all the brochures claim.
But they lack that one thing the Wad has,
that indescribable charm it contains.

When you walk through the sticky Wad at low tide,
and the clay sticks to your soles,
You see the light of the Brandaris,
then you realize you're alive.
You wander through the Wad, wading along,
until you come across old boats,
And you know when the tide comes in,
the leader will blow his whistle.

When you have to hurry back at high tide,
not sure what to do anymore,
You often end up in treacherous spots,
where you get stuck with your foot.
If the rescue team is delayed,
many are thrown into a panic.
But I advise you to pay attention to…
…the beauty of the Wad at night.

I could go on for hours,
until you think 'what a bore this is'.
Your attention might start to wane,
which would be a disservice to the Wad.
Because no matter how we gather here,
from moderate left to radical right,
we must fight for the Wadden,
in the interest of all.

Because no matter how we gather here,
from sneaky to downright mean,
from clumsy to disabled,
from insane to schizophrenic,
we must fight for the Wadden,
in the interest of everyone.
