Hoje Quem Paga Sou Eu
Nelson Gonçalves
Today I'm the One Paying
In the old days, in my times of joy
When I returned from work to home
From this bar, someone would shout ironically
Come in, buddy, so-and-so will pay
There was always someone paying for a drink
For the simple right to speak
There was always a tragedy between two glasses
In the laughter of an unhappy person sobbing
I knew I was a stranger in that environment
A foreigner on the border of this bar
But I drank, others paid, and I left
For the blessed world of my home
Today, I make this bar the branch
Of my home that currently doesn't exist
I have my story to tell
A story that is the same, bitter and sad
I'm just a shadow plunging
Into the ocean of drink, its past
I'm part of this strange brotherhood
Of vermouth, brandy, and the drawn
But if a friend passes by the street
Whose door has not been struck by misfortune
I shout for them to come into this bar, drink with me
Today I'm the one paying!
