Just For Today My Son
Just for today in the morning my son
I will enter your room and silently watch you
Realizing that you're still asleep
And if you're already awake, I'll smile
When I see your face and we'll laugh together before I go to work
Then I'll think of all those children
Who unfortunately don't have a father
Or parents who have no one to kiss
Just for today my son, I'll hug you
I'll feel the beat of your heart on my chest
Because it means you're alive and well
Just for today my son, I'll find a reason
To take you to play in the park, we'll lie on the grass
And I'll be happy with you, then I'll close my eyes
To thank God that I have a son
To share all his joy
Just for today my son, I'll let you have fun
Teaching me things that only you know
Just for today my son, I won't get mad at you
Or yell when I realize you want to teach me something
Just for today my son, I'll sit by your side
I'll help you with your homework and we'll learn together
Just for today my son, this evening I won't scold you
Or even mutter when you scream and cry
When the ice cream truck passes by, even more
I'll run out with you to buy one
Just for today my son, I won't worry
About what will become of you when you grow up
I'll think again about all the decisions
I've made about you, just for today
My son, this evening I'll hold you in my arms
And I'll tell you a story about when you were born
And how much I love you
Just for today my son, tonight I'll let you stay up
Until very late as we sit and gaze at all the stars
Just for today my son, tonight when I run my fingers
Through your hair while you pray
I'll simply thank God
For the greatest gift I've received
Just for today my son, I'll think of the mothers
And fathers who are now searching for their lost children
Just for today my son, I'll think of the mothers
And fathers who visit their children in their graves
Instead of their beds
And of the mothers and fathers
Who are in hospitals watching their children suffer
Screaming inside for not being able to do anything
When I give you a kiss my son
When I bring you close, I'll hold
I'll hold your body tighter
And a little longer
So my son, I'll thank God for you
And I won't ask for anything except one more day of your existence
If just for today my son
It's possible, dear friend
That you won't have a chance to hug your children
And reflect on the importance of being a father
And enjoying your little ones
Remember that this stage only happens
Once in the lives of our children
When they are older, they will remember all the beautiful moments
They spent together, doing the opposite
Will only mark them forever
And then ask yourself
How will my children remember me when they grow up?
