My Dog's Son

Good day, partner, you want to know who I am,
You want to recognize me?
Well, it's me, somewhat changed, a few years older and more worn out. But it's me.
And do you know where I'm going and what I seek?
Well, I loved my dog, the one that died.
I loved him so much that I fought for him, I already told you the story of what happened.
I killed because of him, I messed up, I ran away, I came back, I was arrested and I've already paid.
What I didn't tell you because I didn't know, is that the little female dog that my bay horse impregnated and was the cause of this mess, stayed there at the ranch. And she gave birth and one of the offspring, a cowboy friend kept for me.
I served part of the sentence, four years, when they released me for good behavior, which the law granted me parole.
I went looking for a job and in a bar I met Patricio, a Castilian who as soon as he said to me, 'Good day brother'!
He stirred up memories and longing and started telling me the news of what happened in my absence.
Out of grief, the boss sold the ranch and moved to the city. And the new owners, hearing the testimonies of the ranch hands in my defense, would surely accept me again to be a trusted cowboy.
After all, I only defended myself in that fight.
And a lifetime of good behavior always weighs on the scale, but what piqued my interest the most was Patricio telling me that the little female dog gave birth, he separated the prettiest one, hid him, and raised him as a stray.
Because he knew that sooner or later, I would leave prison.
That's what happened, didn't it?
You already know where I'm going and what I seek is the little dog, my dog's son.
Patricio says he's just like his father, lively, quick, smart, and in good spirits, happily herding that brings joy.
He's a support that the ranch hands treat with care. And seen from afar in the twilight, it's as if he were the soul of my dog.
But animals don't have souls, I know well.
If I loved my dog, I'll also love his son.
But now I'm an Indian, more experienced, more cunning, and I'm no longer capable of recklessness.
As much as I will like this young dog, today I know the value of freedom.
Well, partner, I'm off.
I'm going calmly, without haste, feeling the new winds blowing my old poncho, for me, it's a new life beginning, the free life of an honest man.
Until we meet again, partner, you already know where I'm going and what I seek.
If I loved my dog.
I'll also love his son.
