Out of town near the Arno one evening,
a spring evening,
I saw on the courtyard of a farmhouse
several couples dancing.

I approached, they say to me when they saw me:
"Come, come forward,
do you know here, we don't know
how to entertain like in the city.

It's the waltz of the poor people,
it's a simple waltz, made of nothing.
With two guitars and an organ
they dance until morning.

Our floor is not smooth,
you risk dancing and ending up stiff.
They say 'beauty, blondie',
it's a waltz done right.

And so from a street a figure was seen
approaching,
surely she was there to snoop around
and she was the little boss.

"Stop", she said,
and the beautiful creature replied:
"Go on, I'll come here, someone will
make me dance a little".

this is where the rats gather every day.

When the golden sun shines in the morning
you see that the housewife
hangs out fine laundry
she is certainly much happier.

"Oh good lady,
what is that strip
lying there under the sun?"
She quietly tells me to go there.

Then an old lady from there:
"That's the waltz of the poor people,
I used to dance it, but now I don't remember,
it was there, I danced it when I was young.
When I was a bit of a flirt,
I flirted a lot too, eh!
But now others dance it,
and they all fall for it, even the cleverest ones.
It's a skipped and slid waltz,
they want the bands and the priest".
