I Wanted to Change
I wanted to change, I wanted to change, I wanted to change, I wanted to change
My world taught me to be this way
Running around while the cops come after me
I learned to be smart, I learned to hustle
In the midst of the street life, blowing smoke
I grew up in a rough neighborhood where you can't slip up, where friends and trust are definitely hard to find
I wanted to change, I wanted to change, I wanted to change, I wanted to change
My world taught me to be this way
Running around while the cops come after me
I jumped the school fence to chase after kites
Just shooting the breeze, hanging out on the corner
Throwing rocks at cats, digging through the neighbor's trash
It's a lot of trouble for just one little kid
It's fun to mess around, doing what’s forbidden, throwing stones on rooftops, playing the bad guy
Wooden shotgun, good guy and bad guy, crazy life since early on, always on the lookout for enemies
The biggest troublemaker on the block, acting all wild, with a cocky attitude, a face like a slacker
Hated school, classes or any kind of learning
Give me my BB gun, give me my toy to take out kids
Many times my mom called me a little devil, I'm the kind of guy who can't live without drama
From hearing my name so much, I respond to it, in the dead of night, it’s us in the game, pure poison
My world taught me to be this way
Running around while the cops come after me
I spent my childhood in the hood, causing a lot of trouble
In the lottery heist, the house always falls, getting used to the torture is always tough
Work demands a lot, stealing is my vice
In my house, there’s no plasma or LCD, just an old computer sitting there collecting dust
(My world taught me to be this way, running around while the cops come after me)
I wanted to change, I wanted to change, I wanted to change, I wanted to change
My world taught me to be this way
Running around while the cops come after me
This world taught me to steal, this world taught me to kill
This world taught me to live, in a way that can’t be changed
I wanted to live well, I wanted to be someone one day
Unfortunately, what you want you don’t have
A rich Black person is 1 in 100
I only know how to do wrong, I learned to be this way
Whoever goes down this path soon finds the end (gunshots)
Poor without a job, nothing to show, costs a ton
They closed the doors on me, stealing is my profession
I’d even want a souped-up car, like a sports ride, to get one of those you gotta be a big boss
Or get a bank account at a financial agency, or kidnap a rich kid from a millionaire mom
Thinking honestly doesn’t work, never did and never will
If those who run the country also learned to steal
I rob with a gun, they rob with a scheme
They call me a criminal and call them doctors
I wanted to change, I wanted to change, I wanted to change, I wanted to change
My world taught me to be this way
Running around while the cops come after me
I learned to be smart, I learned to hustle
In the midst of the street life, blowing smoke
I grew up in a rough neighborhood where you can't slip up, where friends and trust are definitely hard to find
I wanted to change, I wanted to change, I wanted to change, I wanted to change
My world taught me to be this way
Running around while the cops come after me
