Daddy Father

Wait, sir
And have mercy, for we have sinned against you
(Lenten liturgy)

For you have not received the spirit of slavery
But you have received the spirit of adoption as sons
In which we cry out: Daddy father
(Romans 8:15)

[Pope John Paul II]
You are my son, today I have begotten you (Psalm 2:7)

I will be his father and he will be my son (2 Samuel 7:14)
These are prophetic words: they speak of God
Who is a father in the highest and most authentic sense of the word
Isaiah says: 'Lord, you are our father
We are the clay and you are the one who shapes us
We are all the work of your hands' (Isaiah 64:7)

Hear, O Israel!

Zion said: 'The Lord has forsaken me
The Lord has forgotten me
Does a woman forget her baby?
Even if a woman were to forget
I will never forget you' (Isaiah 49:14-15; cf. Also 54:10)

Hear, O Israel!

It is significant that in the passages of the prophet Isaiah
God's fatherhood is enriched with connotations
Inspired by motherhood

Jesus announces many times the fatherhood of God
Towards men, linking to the numerous expressions
Contained in the Old Testament

For Jesus, God is not only 'the father of Israel, the father of men'
But 'his father, my father'
(General audience, Wednesday, October 16, 1985)

Our father who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our debts
As we also have forgiven our debtors
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
(St. Peter's Square, Rome, March 22, 1995)

Our father who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our debts
As we also have forgiven our debtors
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
