Verso Por Despedida a Gabriela
Violeta Parra
Verse for Farewell to Gabriela
Today we cry in Chile
For a sorrowful cause.
God has called the goddess,
To his mansion so sublime.
From south to north there are moans,
All candles are lit,
To illuminate Gabriela,
The shadow that is her world today
With deep feeling
I pray for her on my vihuela.
President and benefactor
Of the Spanish language,
The American woman,
Bows her head and weeps,
For the celestial lady
Who has departed from this land,
I offer without hesitation,
In my divine song,
That a bird with sweet trill,
Accompanies her to the high sky.
In the midst of paradise,
There is a chair of fine gold
And a mantle of white linen
That the Virgin herself made for her
An angel with beautiful curls,
Is waiting at the entrance,
For the best guest
Who will occupy that chair,
Until the holy coronation
Santa Mistral crowned.
There is a feast in glory,
And weeping here on earth,
As if a great war,
Has stained history
Never from our memory,
Shall Gabriela be forgotten
The children in schools
No longer have their godmother.
Divine providence
Took the most beautiful flower.
