The Origin of Halloween (Unpacking History)
Hey there, terror buddies
Welcome to Unpacking History with Pascu and Rodri
Today we're here to talk about the origin of Halloween
A long time ago
The Celts celebrated a unique festival
They called it Samhain
And it marked the end of their year
It was believed
That the dead roamed everywhere
That their magic
Grew stronger during this time of year
The evil spirits
Were driven away with bonfires and turnips
And the kids would gather
All the treats that houses offered
They'd take them to the druids for divination
But first, they had to make
A few human, animal, and vegetable sacrifices

When the Romans discovered it, they thought
Such sacrifices were barbaric and tried to ban it
The festival slowly faded until Pope
Gregory IV renamed it All Saints' Day
But in the 19th century, Irish immigrants brought it
To America, and it became popular again
With stories like that of Jack O'Lantern
Stingy Jack was a rogue
Wretched, clever, and a drunk
So much that he even tricked the devil
One day he showed up
But Jack trapped him
Using a cross from his pocket
I want you to give me 10 more years
When he comes back to collect, Jack tricks him again
Trapping him with crosses in an apple tree
How did you win again? Ask for whatever you want
You can never touch my soul again
Larai-larai
When the drunkard dies and heaven won't accept him
He runs to hell but Satan remembers
That your soul is only yours and he can't have it
And if you want rest, go find it on your own
He threw some embers at him
Made a lantern from a turnip
That lights up his path
He wanders endlessly
No one can touch him
He is the wandering Jack O'Lantern
And since there was a surplus of pumpkins in the U.S
They decided to use them as lanterns instead of turnips
To scare off the devil on Halloween
If you celebrate Halloween
Do it with care
Don't go sacrificing people
And if you want to scare
Quickly to the devil
Put a Jack O'Lantern on your door
