Today we are here to talk about the origin of Valentine's Day

In Rome they celebrated a fun festival
Called Lupercalia, it was a very normal day
Illustrious people chose boys
Who went through the forest, disguised as animals

After a few days they met on the mountain
Under a fig tree that was very popular there

There was a fig tree called Ruminalis and it was where according to tradition
The she-wolf Luperca picked up Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome
To breastfeed them, but that has nothing to do with Valentine's Day
So we're not going to tell that in this video

They carried a knife and a goat with them
And when everyone was there, the ritual began

They milk the goat
They sacrifice the goat
And then they smear themselves with goat's blood
Then they all take a piece of wool
And clean their faces with milk

They grab the goat
They skin the goat
They dress in strips of goat skin
And then they laugh because that was a special day

All the Luperci paraded towards Rome
Whipping the local girls

With strips of goat skin bathed in goat's blood as you see
These people squeezed the goats to unsuspected limits

These obscene acts were considered blessings for fertility

Then the church gets angry and Pope Gelasius I, who loved goats
Prohibits and condemns such inappropriate behavior in the 5th century
And he dedicates this sacred day to Saint Valentine
Who was a very nice martyr
That nobody cares about and nobody wants to celebrate

A thousand years later the poet Geoffrey Chaucer
Wrote a poem that went viral
He said that on Valentine's Day some birds
Would gather in a tree to procreate

All of England liked this poem
And some lords had ideas
To conquer the single ladies
And unleash their love

So they started giving gifts and kisses and hugs and hand games
And more shady things that are not worth mentioning

This day was called the day of lovers
Also known as Valentine's Day
