The Exile from the South (or The Exiled from the South)

(the text belongs to chapter lviii of the book 'décimas - autobiography in verse' (1966) by violeta parra. patricio manns, when recording his musicalization in 1971, changed some words and locations from the original printed version - here indicated in italics, also omitting the last stanza. in a recording made by inti-illimani the same year, they return to the text of the book allowing only minimal changes. here the song is presented as it was originally recorded by patricio manns with the modifications he made on violeta's version.)

I left one eye in the lakes
Due to a casual oversight,
The other stayed in Corral
In a tavern of drinks;
I remember that my soul saw
Much damage as a child,
Miseries and treacheries
Tie up my thoughts,
Between the waters and the wind
I get lost in the distance.

My right arm in Lanco
Remained, dear listeners,
The other fell by San Vicente
I don't know with what purpose;
My chest in Curacautín
I see it in a little garden,
My hands in Maitencillo
Wave hello in Pelequén,
My mouth in Perquilauquén
Blows on a small pipe.

One foot got tangled in Tranapuente
Crossing a corner,
And the other in Quiriquina
Sinks into the sea,
My discontented heart
Beat with sorrow in Temuco
And cried for me in Calbuco,
Shivering from the frost,
I go and straighten my path
Up the Chacabuco hill.

I leave my nerves in Collayque,
The blood in San Sebastián,
And in the city of Chillán
Calmness drops to zero,
My kidneys in Cabrero
Destroy a walk,
And in a street in Itata
My instrument breaks,
And I pass through Nacimiento
One silver morning.
