Samba Lament
I miss
The sambas of the past
When the samba used to leave
A vague sadness
In our hearts
It wasn't bitterness
Nor misfortune
Nor suffering
It was nostalgia
It was melancholy
It was a good feeling.
In today's days
The samba has changed
There's no more sorrow
The rhythm has changed
And people don't even feel it
Its melody
Is a false joy
That fades with the wind
No one noticed
But the samba lost
Its voice of lament.
When I sing in the samba circle
A samba that is older
The young ones fall silent, listen, learn,
And even sing along with me
What's missing for those who make a samba
Is the sadness that comes from another time
Those who don't know the science of samba
Will do what the moment asks for
The secret of the strength of samba
Is the experience of its foundation
What makes a good samba eternal
Is the beauty it has in its lament.
