Os Meninos de Huambo
Paulo de Carvalho
The Boys from Huambo
With threads made of past tears
The boys from Huambo bring joy
They build dreams with the elders hand in hand
And in the sky discover magic stars
With lips to speak new poetry
They spell out the stars like letters
And gather in the sky like little stones
Star letters to form new words
The boys around the bonfire
Will learn things of dreams and truth
Will learn how to win a flag
Will know the cost of freedom
With the most beautiful smiles of the plateau
They make funny little sums
Adding kisses with flowers and sweat
And subtracting early mornings by moonlight
They divide the fine rain over the corn
Multiply the wind by the sea
Release to the sky the stars already written
Constellations that always shine
The boys around the bonfire
Will learn things of dreams and truth
Will learn how to win a flag
Will know the cost of freedom
Always new words, always new
Words of this ever new time
Because the boys invented new things
And even say that the stars belong to the people
So happy around the bonfire
They gather words of this ever new time
Because the boys invented new things
And even say that the stars belong to the people
