En Revenant de La Revue
Paulus
On Returning from the Show
I am the head of a happy family
For a long time I had planned
To take my wife, my sister, my daughter
To see the show of the fourteenth of July
After breaking the fast
In chorus we set off
The women had taken the lead
I was giving my arm to my mother-in-law
Everyone had to bring
Something to eat
First, I carried the prunes
My wife carried two hams
My mother-in-law, as a stew
Had a calf's head
My daughter her chocolate
And my sister two fried eggs
Gay and content, we walked triumphantly
Going to Longchamp, hearts at ease
Without hesitation, as we were going to celebrate
To see and compliment the French army
Soon we tread on the grass of Longchamp
We start by settling in
Then, I uncork the twelve liters of wine
And we start snacking
Suddenly we shout long live France
By God, the show begins
I climb a flowering chestnut tree
And my wife on the back of a postman
My sister who loves firefighters
Cheers these proud soldiers
My tender wife claps
When the Saint-Cyrians parade
My mother-in-law cries out
While eyeing the Spahis
I, I could only admire
Our brave General Boulanger
Gay and content, we were triumphant
To see ourselves at Longchamp, hearts at ease
Without hesitation, we all wanted to celebrate
To see and compliment the French army
On the way, I invite some soldiers
To come and refresh themselves a bit
But, by licking glasses
My family had their little quirks
I leave the arm of my mother-in-law
I take that of a canteen woman
And in the evening, when we return
We are all completely drunk
My sister who was in the process
Was bringing back an infantryman
My daughter who had her plume
Leaned on a cuirassier
My wife, without ceremony
Kissed a dragoon
My mother-in-law at a trot
Galopped arm in arm with a Turco
Gay and content, we were triumphant
On returning from Longchamp, hearts at ease
Without hesitation, we had just acclaimed
To see and compliment the French army
