1918 Revisited
The day hangs clear from a silent star
Leaves fall slow like distant jazz
The empty streets where fear takes flight
We’re left with no comfort from a lousy bar
Ernesto denies it all, says they’re exaggerating
They ask us to save up to get through a month
Dishes pile up, a war kitchen
A prayer from you would do me a lot of good
If you saw this square, you wouldn’t believe it
The ghost trees look at each other
The afternoons weave pure nonsense
It’s neither late nor early, 'cause there’s nowhere to go
The afternoons in slumber find me drinking
From a bottomless glass where I’m never there
I know it’s no excuse, but that’s just the moment
I feel a nostalgia that makes no sense
The coast in the distance is cloaked in mist
Like a stubborn punishment that won’t let up
And through that gray veil, I focus on a crack
Of light like a better tomorrow that’s yet to come
If you saw this square, you wouldn’t believe it
The ghost trees look at each other
The afternoons weave pure nonsense
It’s neither late nor early, 'cause there’s nowhere to go
