Rebel
I know they have an idea of me in the countryside
Because I don't bow down to those in charge
Because by despising others' weaknesses
I know how to pave my own way to ask for what I want
Because they haven't seen me licking the yoke
Or sniffing around to make a buck
And they know well that I'm tough in speech
And no mule's bridle can hold me back
Because when I have to speak the truth
I speak it straight, like a man
Even if those truths reveal maggots
Where no one would believe there were worms
Because to the well-dressed with covered kidneys
For those who use laws, no sheriff
I treat them the same as those who only have
A cloth to cover their backsides
Because I'm not satisfied with four lies
From the big shots who come from the town
To praise worn-out currencies
And make promises they never kept
Because when I brought my woman to the ranch
I forgot there are judges to perform weddings
And that the best woman is worth nothing
If her man hasn't paid the right price for her
Because I've raised my kids to be unfaithful
Even if the priest shouts they'll go to hell
And I say wherever it fits that those who only live
Reaching for the sky are useless
Because even though I don't have a place to lay my head
I'm richer than those who expand their fields
Paying with dry grave feasts
To the poor laborer, who strains his lungs working
That's why they have an idea of me in the countryside!
Because a quebracho tree stands among the ceibos!
Because they've all been marked
And envy seeing me as a rebel!
And what do I care? I'm wild and free!
I don't follow leaders or get tangled in laws!
And I go on the clear paths of my own will
And I don't need anyone to make me a guide!
