In Fernen Land

In Distant Land
In distant land, unreachable by your steps,
There lies a castle, called Montsalvat;
A shining temple stands there in the midst,
So precious, as nothing known on earth;
Within it, a vessel of miraculous blessing
Is guarded there as the highest relic:
It was brought down by a host of angels,
That the purest of humans may care for it;
Annually, a dove descends from heaven,
To renew its wondrous power:
It is called the Grail, and the purest belief
Bestowed through it upon its knighthood.
Whoever is chosen to serve the Grail,
Is equipped with unearthly might;
All evil tricks are lost on him,
When he sees it, the night of death retreats.
Even if he is sent to distant lands,
Appointed as a champion of virtue,
His holy power will not be taken from him,
Remaining unrecognized as his knight.
So noble is the Grail's blessing,
Revealed - it must flee from the layman's eye;
Therefore, you should not doubt the knight,
If you recognize him - then he must depart from you.
Now hear how I reward forbidden questions!
I was sent to you by the Grail:
My father Parzival wears its crown,
His knight I am - called Lohengrin.
