Cuatro líneas para el cielo
Reinaldo Yiso
Four lines to the sky
Leading a little boy held by the hand
he was presented to the sergeant on duty.
"The world is lost," he said in amazement,
"only seven years old, so young and already a thief."
The boy, meanwhile, cried bitterly.
"And what did he steal?" said the authority.
"He stole a ball of yarn," the bookseller replied,
"all these rascals should be locked up."
Sir, I do not deny it.
It is true that I have stolen,
I was so close
to being able to reach
with this kite
to the blue of the sky,
where mom went
just yesterday...
Don't you see there is a letter
attached to the kite?
I didn't have enough thread,
I saw it... and what do I know.
I didn't think twice,
the bookseller was surprised,
I swear to you, sergeant,
that's why I was a thief.
If they are going to take me to prison, I'm sorry for my mother,
for this poor letter that will never arrive.
In it, I ask her why she went so far away
leaving us so alone, me and my dad...
Without saying a word, the sergeant caressed him
and then the bookseller, wanting to cry,
placing that ball of yarn in his hands,
"Now yes!" he said, "Your letter will arrive!"
