No Rancho Fundo

Down on the Ranch
Down on the ranch
Way out past the edge of town
Where pain and longing
Remind me of the city
Down on the ranch
With a sad and deep gaze
A dark-skinned man sings to the waters
With eyes full of tears
Poor dark-skinned man
Who at night in the dew
Waits for the moon in the yard
With a cigarette as his companion
Without a wave
He picks up the guitar
And the moon as alms
Comes to the yard of this dark-skinned man
Down on the ranch
Way out past the edge of town
There was never joy again
Neither at night nor during the day
The groves
No longer whisper secrets
And the last palm tree
Has died in the mountain range
The birds
Have wintered in their nests
So sad is this sadness
It fills nature with darkness
Why is that?
Just because of the dark-skinned man
Who was once great, now is small
For a house of thatch
