Der Engel
Richard Wagner
The Angel
In the early days of childhood
I often heard of angels saying,
Who exchange the lofty bliss of heaven
With the earthly sun,
That where a heart in sorrow
Pines hidden from the world,
That where it wants to bleed quietly,
And perish in floods of tears,
That where fervently its prayer
Only pleads for redemption,
There the angel descends,
And gently lifts it towards heaven.
Yes, an angel also descended to me,
And on radiant wings
He leads, far from every pain,
My spirit now towards heaven!
