El desastre de Rancagua
Rolando Alárcon
The Disaster of Rancagua
Young Bernardo O'Higgins,
so brave and so calm,
arrives in the town of Rancagua
as a Chilean soldier.
Charge, my brave ones,
to defend with honor
the land where we were born
and the glorious flag.
Surrounded on all sides
in that beautiful room
the smoke from the cannons
lit up the stars.
They were all trapped
in the square of Rancagua.
Death stained the star,
blood tainted the waters.
Young Bernardo O'Higgins
on his chestnut horse
riding through blood and fire
went to a mountain to cry.
