Homem Não Chora

Men Don't Cry

Today here, looking at you, my father
I'm remembering how long it's been
That for the first time in my life I cried
It wasn't when I was born because I know I came out crying
And no one remembers that
It was when one day I fell and stumbled
I was a child, I scraped myself, my leg hurt
I wanted to cry, I looked at you, what hope
You didn't run to lift me up from the ground
You just looked at me and said
What's this, boy? Get up from there
Men don't cry

What you said at that moment struck deep
Because you were the greatest man in the world
You didn't know how to lie to me or anyone
Time passed, I grew up too
But always remembering
Men don't cry
That's what you said

The world kept hitting me
I felt the blows of poverty
Seeing the sadness surrounding our family
And sometimes the turmoil I felt was so much
That a blind knot formed in my throat
A desire to scream, yell, cry, but which
Your words, father, didn't leave my ears
Men don't cry

So, even though I felt everything, I swallowed it all
And held back the tears that hurt
And they didn't fall, not even with any pain
The 1940 war came and I was there
A grown man, ready to defend Brazil
You and mother came to see me off
Mother, poor thing, when she hugged me, cried with sobs
But we, no
We just looked at each other, hugged and said goodbye
Like two men, without shedding a tear

Ah! How well I remember, it was a Sunday
Also, who can forget that ungrateful time
I went to war, fought, yelled like a wild dog
War is something that torments
I got injured, missing you, wrote letters
I dreamed, almost despaired
But even though crying would have been good, I never cried
Because I always remembered
What my father taught me
- Men don't cry

Now, seeing you there like that, quiet, speechless
Even with the stubble, because there was no time to shave
Everyone around, looking and crying for you
I want to remember, I want to hold on, I want to imagine
That we always agreed that men don't cry

I want to imagine that one day you'll come back to our humble home
And we'll be able to see each other again to talk
Then a desperation comes over me
The pain of seeing you like that is so much, so much, father
That knot forms in my throat again
And a stubborn tear almost falls
I look again at your white hair
And someone tells me now to look for the last time
That it's time for you to embark
I pass my hand on your forehead that's already, already thoughtless

And the pain I'm feeling inside is increasing
Increasing, almost bursting my chest
And I see no other way but to say goodbye
You asked me so much not to cry
Men don't cry
You got tired of telling me, but, but father
Seeing you like that, leaving
Forgive me, but I have to cry
