Quando Tiver Sessenta
Rosa de Saron
When I'm Sixty
When I'm sixty
May my eyes work well
And I, being alone, pick up my grandchildren from school
May their smiles remind me that they are
The fortune I've accumulated
Our visits to the nursing home
Are just to see the paintings of those who lived there
Because my friends will be with me
Casting their nets in the river
Chatting about how nostalgia has always been in vogue
Years late
But then I remember: Boy, you're only thirty-three
And your world is still the same
Where the lines for a kidney wrap around the continent
Which is too hot
Except inside the car with closed windows
Because, if open, everything could end in a robbery
If I make it there
May we be more doctors and less judges
And, when we're at a traffic light
May it not be to ask for money, but to give hugs
Handing out stickers saying
“It's Christmas, the King was born and a blanket also saves!”
We will understand that God is Father and Son at the same time
And that will be enough
We will realize that it's our brothers
Who are out there cold on the street
While we remain here safe and warm
By our fireplaces
But then I remember: Boy, you're in your thirties
And I shout: “time, stop for a moment so I can breathe!
I haven't managed to be half of what I should be yet!”
Then He tells me: “you're still a dreamer
Who still dreams that everything will change
When you're sixty
