Así Soy (Milonga)
Ruben Alberto Benegas
This is Me (Milonga)
With half a century carrying
Guitar and verses on my back
I'm like a setting sun
But still shining
What I've sown singing
I gathered it in emotions
And the fruit of my songs
Are spikes of friendship
For I made an altar of humility
In all hearts
That I am a ripe fruit
My presence attests it
I am a milestone of ancient homeland
For a century of future
I am of pure Indian lineage
For several generations
And my gaucho convictions
In this warning remains
That I will uphold as long as I can
To stand firm on my heels
That's why at an old man's pace
I don't rush my walk
Slow fire doesn't snatch
And roasts the ribs evenly
Slowly one goes far
I fulfilled my destiny
And now old, I bow
Just like a weeping willow
I'm the same as a milestone
That is indicating the way
In any rush
I don't flinch or bend down
I'm a quebracho palenque
That withstands any sitting
I have a well-tempered soul
And whoever wants this race
To beat me from the outside
This advice goes among others
A six-loop and a colt boot
It's not for just anyone to use
And here I leave the experience
Of over seventy winters
And I await eternal rest
With no judge but my conscience
I will only leave behind
The honesty of what I've lived
And at the end of my journey
Like the tree, I will die
Without strength, but standing
On guard: I am not defeated
