For You (Milonga)
With an old guitar
I’m singing to love
And though the road is tough
I’m pulling out thorns as I go
I remember a ranch far away
That I left in Madariaga
Dirt yard, open sky
What a beautiful childhood I had!
Happy kid from the ranches
Who made up his own toys
Flying high in the mornings
Chasing the sun with a kite
When night fell
My imagination took flight
Thinking of things in the world
Slowly I’d drift off to sleep
The path was painted silver
By the round moon’s glow
And it filled with little stars
The belly of the lagoon
I’ve fought many battles
Searching for wild fruit
And around nightfall
I’d head home by the will-o'-the-wisp
While my mother cooks
A lantern lights up the ranch
Smell of hearty stew
And verses from Old Pancho
Every time I return home
There’s a new mystery waiting
If a local tells me stories
It’s Don Lázaro Gimenez
Forgive me for mentioning my home
But the memory flatters me
And here we are reminiscing
About the gauchos of Madariaga
