Pa' Un Amigo Cantor (Milonga)
Ruben Alberto Benegas
For a Singing Friend (Milonga)
Today I sing to the troubadour
From the cliffs of Belgrano
For being a good human
Besides being a great singer
A goldfinch, a nightingale
At thirty years of age
And with great skill
When he strums a guitar
And shows off his talent
This true artist
Born in Buenos Aires
But raised in Mar del Plata
His presence is pleasant
Friendly at all times
With very noble feelings
Among friends and strangers
He started at eight years old
In the art of folklore
He stands out among the best
And never disappoints
And so fate took him
With Victor Abel Gimenez
Through life's ups and downs
Also with Perla Carlino
And by walking these roads
Radio Atlantica saw him
On LU 13 he sang
And LU 28 saw him arrive
On Channel 8 perform
And even on Channel 10 he stopped by
Don Roberto Cambaré
Became his godfather
And also Perla Carlino
Later became his godmother
I think I know why
He received that distinction
It must have been the admiration
That both felt for him
The grace that God gave him
And his noble heart
He has one condition
And that’s the spirit of sacrifice
Where he showed his craft
With great determination
It’s not for just any guy
To spend twenty hours singing
In the square and waiting
To be crowned champion
And since that occasion
They’re still talking about it
A follower of Oscar del Cerro
Also of Rogelio Araya
He followed without fail
The path of Alberto Merlo
And I loved to see him
Caught up in the guitar jams
Always behind his strings
Eager to meet him
To have him close by
And ask him for a favor
They asked me to sing
At a festival, one day
But there, I had no one
To accompany me
Then how strange it was
Benegas offered to help
And I stepped forward
Seeing his smiling face
And for me to sing
He offered me his hand
To offer himself in that moment
Since I was a stranger
It left me very moved
Filled with gratitude
For this feeling
Of friendship for Ruben
I share it with who is
My dear wife
Whose name is Ilda Rosa
And she’s his friend too.
