Pedro Navaja (part. Willie Colon)

Rubén Blades Rubén Blades

Pedro Navaja (feat. Willie Colon)

I saw him pass by the corner of the old neighborhood
With the sway that handsome men have when they walk
His hands always in the pockets of his coat
So they don't know which one of them has the dagger

Wear a wide-brimmed, half-slanted hat
And sneakers in case there are problems, get out of here fast
Dark glasses so they don't know what you're looking at

And a gold tooth that shines when he laughs
About three blocks from that corner a woman
He walks along the entire sidewalk for the fifth time

And he enters a hall and takes a drink to forget
That the day is slow and there are no clients to work with
A car passes very slowly along the avenue
It has no marks, but everyone knows that it's a police force, uhm
Pedro Navaja, hands always inside his coat

Look and smile and the gold tooth shines again
As you walk, your gaze moves from corner to corner
Not a soul is seen, the entire avenue is deserted
When suddenly that woman comes out of the hall
And Pedro Navaja clenches a fist inside his coat

Look to one side, look to the other and don't see anyone
And running, but quietly, he crosses the street
And meanwhile on the other sidewalk goes that woman
Grumbling because he didn't have any money to eat

As she walks, she takes out a revolver from the old coat, that woman
And he's going to put it in his wallet so it doesn't get in the way
A thirty-eight Smith and Wilson special
What does he carry on his shoulders to free her from all evil?

And Pedro Navaja, dagger in hand, went after him
The gold tooth was lighting up the entire avenue, it was easy!
While he laughed, the dagger plunged him without compassion
When suddenly a shot like a cannon sounded
And Pedro Navaja fell on the sidewalk while he saw that woman
That revolver in hand and mortally wounded he told him
I was thinking: Today is not my day, I'm tired
But Pedro Navaja, you are worse, you are nowhere

And believe me people, even though there was noise, no one came out
There were no curious people, there were no questions, no one cried
Only a drunk with the two bodies stumbled
He took the revolver, the dagger, the pesos and left
And stumbling he went away singing out of tune
The choir that I brought here and gives the message of my song

Life gives you surprises, surprises life gives you, oh God
Pedro Navajas, corner bully
He who kills with the sword, ends with the sword

Life gives you surprises, surprises life gives you, oh God
Brave fisherman, to the hook you threw
Instead of a sardine, you hooked a shark

I like to live in America
Life gives you surprises, surprises life gives you, oh God
New York City has eight million stories
Life gives you surprises, surprises life gives you, oh God
As my grandmother used to say, he who laughs last, laughs best
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la
I like to live in America
Life gives you surprises, surprises life gives you, oh God
When destiny commands it, not even the bravest can change it
If you were born to be a hammer, the nails will fall from the sky
Life gives you surprises, surprises, life gives you, oh God
In a neighborhood of handsome people, be careful on the sidewalk
Watch out camera, he doesn't run, he flies
Life gives you surprises, surprises, life gives you, oh God
As in a Kafka novel, the drunk turned down the alley
Life gives you
