Porto Covo
Rui Veloso
Porto Covo
Biting into an orange on the cliff
Looking at the blue world in front of me
Listening to a nightingale nearby
In the calm improvisation of the sunset
Below, trembling fires in the tents
Offshore, the waters shine like silver
And the breeze tells old tales
Of ports and pirate bays
There was a peach tree on the island
Planted by a Vizier from Odemira
They say he killed himself young for love
Here, in the place of Porto Côvo
The moon has already descended upon this peace
And reigns over all this starlight
Around, all life delights
While a bream grills on the embers
In the distance, the citadel of a ship
Lights up in the sea like a desire
Behind me, the breath of destiny
Brings me back to memories of Alentejo
Biting into an orange on the cliff
Looking ahead at the dark blue
I could be a fish in the tide
Swimming without past or future
There was a peach tree on the island
Planted by a Vizier from Odemira
They say he killed himself young for love
Here, in the place of Porto Côvo
