The Dog
When I was a kid, I had a funny dog
A mix of shepherd, poodle, and dalmatian
One day after school, I waited in vain
My friend, my buddy, didn’t show up
And suddenly all my ships were coming back to port
On a day you wouldn’t let a dog out
My dad did everything to chase away my pain
A few days later, he brought back my dog
It’s your dog, it’s really him
You’re happy, say thank you
It wasn’t mine, I acted like it was
And it was fine, just fine
Because seeing my dad happy like a kid
For the first time, I admit I pretended
I played the grown-up, I was the dad
I hugged that dog I didn’t even know
This dog that looked just like my own
The one I buried two days before
My dad never knew, he was so happy
To have tricked me and comforted me, though
It’s your dog, it’s really him
You’re happy, say thank you
It wasn’t mine, I acted like it was
And it was fine, just fine
And since that time, I try to please people
When I wait for summer, I accept the spring
And I say thank you, and even from time to time
I’ve surprised myself by being truly happy
It’s your dog, it’s really him
You’re happy, say thank you
It wasn’t mine, I acted like it was
And it was fine, just fine.
