Le premier pas
Claude-Michel Schönberg
The First Step
The first step, I'd like her to take the first step. I know that's not how it's usually done. Yet I'd like her to be the one to come to me, Because, you see, I don't dare Look for a way To see her, to please her, To approach her, to talk to her, And not rush her, To tell her words of love Without knowing if she'll love me back Or reject this first step. The first step, I'd like her to take the first step. We could wait a long time like this. We could spend Years just looking at each other And living our lives separately. I would meet her At the bottom of the stairs, Then, like every day, She'll say, 'Hello'. Only this time, She'll take my arm, Lead me into her house Where we'll take The first step of love, In her bed, day after day. She'll reveal her body to me, Give me all the regrets Of not having said the first word sooner. The first word, I'd like her to say the first word. At night I dream of it and it's silly. If she only wanted To give me a sign quietly, Then I think I would Take the first step.
