Pilchas gauchas

SOLEDAD SOLEDAD

Gauchos' Clothes

Gauchos' clothes with pride
I like to wear them
because I walk singing verses
that I learned in this land.
A mother cannot love
the one who was abandoned
that's part of my people
foreigner in my place.
Knowing about ancient Greece and
universal history
surely helps us
in cultural life.
Let's cultivate the music
from some distant country
surely it's not a sin
if I know the one from here.
But if I'm playing music
the song from another place
without knowing a style, a vagüela,
a balseao, guacho from our culture
foreigner in their place.
If Fierro sounds strange to me
or Lugones is ignored
that really causes harm
foreigner in their place.
Cultured people in capitals
turn their backs on the country
copying them even in the way they walk
and in the way they dress
like the distant countries
that come to live here.
We make it easy for them,
the same ones we criticize
and it gets lost in the memory
of the pain of the brothers
who with their bones sowed
this American soil.
And so it happened and happens to us
all that happened
they touched us all over
the hell with it.
The people were left with little
after putting in their effort
and don't even imagine in dreams
that someday it will change
if our souls are not filled
with deep indianness.
Let's put our feet on the ground
let's uncover the truth
and let's find out that there are many
who even though they were born here
are strangers in the land
foreigner in my place.
They live looking at Europe or
the imperial pirate
and if they see you in gaucho clothes
they say you're disguised
Ay, ay ay ay vi'a di'r parando
I'm just a criollo
I'm not here to seek your applause
I just want your brotherhood.
