Lo Que El Tiempo Me Enseño
Tabaré Cardozo
What Time Taught Me
Time taught me that over the years
You learn less than what you ignore
Time, which is a treacherous old man
Teaches you when the time has come
Time taught me how it could be
In the university of the streets
With truth lit up on a corner
Just like a little lantern on the sidewalk
Time taught me that friends
Are counted on the fingers of one hand
That's why maybe I don't count them
To think that I have a thousand brothers
Time taught me that traitors
Sit at the table by your side
And the man who stabs you in the back
Shares bread with those same hands
Because I have nothing to spare
That's why I say I'm rich
Because I'd rather be a poor guy
Than ever be a sorry guy
Time taught me that flags
Are sticks with tattered pieces that flutter
And the map is a paper that kings divide
While men fight
Time taught me that misery
Is the fault of miserable men
That justice is slow and never arrives
But it's the nightmare of the guilty
Time taught me that memory
Is no less powerful than forgetfulness
That only time and victory
Take care of forgetting the defeated
Time taught me that the brave
Will write history with their blood
But the history written in books
Is written with the pen of the coward
Time taught me to distrust
What time itself has taught me
That's why sometimes I have hope
That time might be wrong
