Earrings for Playing
When I was little
To adorn my ears
My mother sometimes put on me
Four red cherries
And all silly I still remember
That I went to school proud and beautiful
Red earrings shining bright
I asked for mirrors to admire myself
Everyone said it suits you well
Remember the rich girl manners
I saw them, reviewed them as wealth
Then I ate them for dessert
One day the other girls
Daughters like me from poverty
Put on my ears
Two little princess earrings
All dressed up, blushing faces
I went to the challenges at the corn husking
My earrings came from some orchard
They didn't leave marks on my skin
Then later I saw you and loved you
You gave me earrings of pure gold
Blessed be you but in truth
I see cherries, I feel nostalgia
