Água no Leite
Teodoro e Sampaio
Water in Milk
A greedy milkman who deceived the customers
Mixed water in the milk and sold it to the people
Getting rich quickly, he said jokingly
There's nothing in this world that a man wants and doesn't do
As long as I draw water from the well in the bucket
There's no lack of milk in the square
The money from his theft was kept in a bag
And very well hidden so it wouldn't be found
But he had a monkey that watched the trickery
It seems he said, spying from the window
I'm ashamed to know that in the past
We were of the same race
But one day the hidden monkey followed him
Took the bag of money and threw it into the river
He returned to the forest and thought to himself
I'm ashamed of the man for resembling me
Man is a deceitful creature and sees in his fellow man
His greatest enemy
Desperate, the milkman threw himself into the river
But he didn't save a single cent of the cursed money
He sat on the riverbank and spoke while crying
I wanted to get rich quickly and now I'm poorer
What a fate was mine, everything the water gave me
The same water took away
