A La Abuela Emilia
Teresa Parodi
To Grandma Emilia
From Buenos Aires, I write you these lines
I want you to know that I think of you
With that infinite patience, taking care
Of the flowers, the birds, you usually have
Here, hope has not abandoned me
But I miss chatting with you
I remember the day we said goodbye
I heard you repeat to me that everything will be fine
Ma'am, I ask myself: How do you live
With such great nostalgia? I don't know
Sometimes, it seems like I can't resign myself
But other times, it helps to remember you
If I could now, I would fly
To see you and stay by your side again
And hear you tell me the stories again
By the window, like in childhood
My mother has told me that much has changed
That everything is forgotten and also
That she can barely walk, that's why I write to you
To see if it cheers you up and improves again
Remember me, grandma, don't forget that I wait
To water your plants and sew again
Here, my nostalgia is cured just
If I imagine you just as I left you
It doesn't matter if you heed my many reasons
The only thing certain is that I want to know
If you water the plants, if you take care of the flowers
If you wait for my steps at dusk
Well, I'll leave you, remember me a little
Here in Buenos Aires, it starts to rain
The children just arrived from school
I miss you, you know, write to me
